world’s oceans are polluted by a “plastic smog” made up of an estimated more than 170 trillion plastic particles that, if gathered would weigh approximately 2 million tonnes, according to a new study published by the 5 Gyres Institute. The new global estimate analyzes trends of ocean plastic from 1979 to 2019.


Without urgent policy action, the rate at which plastics enter the oceans could increase by around 2.6 times between now and 2040, the study found.

 
The world is producing a record amount of single-use plastic waste, mostly made from polymers created from fossil fuels, despite global efforts to reduce plastic pollution and carbon emissions, according to a new report released recently.
 
The second Plastic Waste Makers Index, compiled by the philanthropic Minderoo Foundation, found the world generated 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste in 2021, which was 6 million metric tons more than in 2019, when the first index was released.
 
The report found the additional plastic waste created in those two years equates to nearly one 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) more for every person on the planet and was driven by demand for flexible packaging like films and sachets.
 
Similar studies, warnings articles were published in the last 40 years without any positive impact. The plastic waste problem is worse than ever.
 
What can be the reasons of losing the battles against plastic pollution for more than four decades?
 
Probably profit considerations overruled environmental and health considerations, as usual.
 
Maybe we lost battles but we cannot lose the war because plastic pollution can be a serious danger for the survival of mankind.

Just an idea:

The annual GDP of the member countries of the NATO is 46.756.909 Million USD.
The required annual military spendings of the member countries is the 2% of the GDP that is 935.138 Million USD.
NATO countries could buy for 2 % of their GDP around 267.182 ThermoDeg Power Plants.
Only 69.500 ThermoDeg Mini Power Plants could process all the 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste generated in the world in 2021.
So only 26% of the required one year military spending of the NATO countries could solve the plastic waste problem in the whole world.
